Effective Communication: Keeping the Context
I can’t tell you how many times I have received a message thanking me, or asking for more information, and I can’t remember what my original message said. Some E-mail programs automatically copy the message you are responding to into your reply. If yours doesn’t, be specific in your message or cut and paste parts of the message you are replying to into your response. It is standard to insert > before any such reference text.
Example:
>I will be in your area next week.
>If you want to save on travel costs
>I could speak to your group then.

Thanks, Wayne. We could schedule you for Tuesday morning. How about meeting for dinner when you arrive Monday night; say, 5:00 at The Place Next Door?
