35. Effective Communication Summary:
  • Before sending a message, ask yourself if the recipient would be interested in it, then ask them.
  • Become a source of answers, not of raw data.
  • If you choose to send jokes, make sure the recipient is willing. Avoid off-color jokes.
  • Avoid long-winded messages.
  • Summarize points in bullet form at the beginning of the message.
  • Use the recipient’s preferred communication method; don’t send him or her multiple copies of the same message.
  • Do not assume everyone uses E-mail the same way or as frequently as you do.
  • Pick up the telephone or meet when a personal approach is most appropriate.
  • Send attachments in the way that puts the least possible burden on the system.
